Student data & FERPA.
Last updated June 12, 2026
The Daily Capital is built to be used in classrooms, and we take student privacy seriously. This page explains, in plain English, how we handle student data. It complements our Privacy Policy and Terms.
Our commitments
- We do not sell student data — ever.
- We do not use student data for targeted advertising or to build advertising profiles.
- We use student data only to provide the Service to the student and their teacher.
- We delete student data on request.
What we collect from students
A student’s name (display name), email (for passwordless sign-in), the lessons they complete, and their quiz scores. That’s it. We don’t collect more than we need to show a teacher whether their students are doing the assigned work and how they’re scoring.
Who can see it
A teacher sees only the students in their own classes — their names, lesson completion, and quiz scores for that class. Teachers cannot see a student’s sign-in, activity in other classes, or unrelated account data. Students cannot see each other’s data.
FERPA
When a school or teacher uses The Daily Capital with students, we act as a “school official” with a “legitimate educational interest” under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA): we perform a function the school would otherwise perform itself, under the school’s direction, and we use education records only for that purpose. We do not re-disclose student data except as permitted, and we delete it on request.
COPPA and state laws
The Service is intended for students 13 and older. We design our data practices to align with FERPA, COPPA, and applicable state student-privacy laws.
Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs)
We’re happy to review and sign a district’s Data Privacy Agreement. Reach out to privacy@thedailycapital.co to start.
Deletion
Schools, teachers, parents, or students can request deletion of student data by emailing privacy@thedailycapital.co. We’ll confirm and complete deletion promptly.
