Equity research: how a coverage universe and a rating actually work

Daily Desk · Editorial5 min read
A sell-side analyst covering 15 semiconductor names can't add a sixteenth without dropping one. That constraint — not conviction — explains half of what shows up on your screen as a rating change.

A headline crosses at 6:04 a.m.: "Morgan Stanley upgrades XYZ to Overweight, price target $210 from $165." The stock jumps 4% before the open. Most people read that as one smart person deciding the stock is good. It's closer to a manufacturing process with a publication schedule, a compliance department, and a hard capacity limit.
